Future

Music

Given the international multi-platinum success of his 1997 seven-million-selling album MY WAY (which included the No. 1 chart-topping, MTV Award-winning singles "You Make Me Wanna" and "Nice & Slow" (No. 1 for 4 straight weeks), the solid audience he created on sold out tours with Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson and P. Diddy (formerly known as Puff Daddy), his emergence as a bona fide actor via his stellar work in four major movies, it would be easy for Usher Raymond to rest on his laurels.  After all, at only 22, the recipient of two Grammy Award nominations, three Billboard Music Awards, a Soul Train Award, two ASCAP Awards and one Blockbuster Music Award, Usher's already well on his way to achieving his primary goal of being an all-round entertainer, using multi-faceted talents and skills as a singer, songwriter, producer, dancer and actor.

But with the same drive and unstoppable energy that has propelled him into the upper echelon of today's young performers, Usher is ready to take it to the next phase with 8701, his fourth and undoubtedly most expressive album.   "When I started working on this record, I knew I had to cater to the audience I already have.  But I also wanted to make an album with songs that could appeal to everyone," says the upbeat Atlanta resident. "I really analyzed myself as an artist and I'm really like a rapper who sings.  I like to tell stories in my songs."

Usher has delivered an album that is a real fusion of hip-hop-flavored pop and edgy R&B.  8701 reflects a new level of creative growth, maturity and input for Usher, who served as the album's executive producer.  "I did a lot of writing this time," he says. "It was like an evolution and I was involved conceptually this time with every tune."

Commenting on 8701, Arista President Antonio "L.A." Reid - who has been involved on a hands-on basis with Usher's recording career since signing him to LaFace Records in 1993 - notes, "With MY WAY, Usher found himself as a recording artist.  This new album reflects the confidence he was able to gain with the success he had with that record.  He's very clear about who he is and 8701 is proof of his growth and maturity as a singer and as a musical conceptualist.  I dialogued a lot with him about this album and worked closely with him and the producers involved and I'm incredibly excited about what Usher has created with this record."

Working with hitmakers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, She'kespere, Babyface, new producers Eddie "Hustlechild" Clement and Mike City, Usher has crafted a record that, he notes, "has songs that we can all relate to.  As a prime example, he cites "Can U Help Me," one of four songs produced by Jam & Lewis, who "really helped me develop ideas when we were recording."

The track features an exceptionally strong vocal performance by Usher and he notes, "I co-wrote it with Jimmy and Terry and it's a dramatization of what an entertainer goes through," he says.  "One of the reasons I have not been able to get into a serious relationship is that I work so much.  I know it's a sacrifice to put my career first but it means putting love on the shelf and being lonely by myself.  Yes, it's a very personal song."
